Connections is a student-led initiative that promotes inclusion and encourages its members to explore their diverse identities at Washington University in St. Louis. We provide a respectful space to learn and discuss diversity topics and generate a sense of community for students of all backgrounds.
Diverse representation is crucial for constructive dialogue, and we strive continually to achieve a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. In total, 44 individuals attended seminars and dialogue sessions in the 2014-2015 academic year. Of these students, Connections garnered a core group of 21 members representing a number of different degree programs and departments. Connections members come from a number of different social identities including various races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, ages, physical abilities, religions, gender expressions & identities, and socioeconomic statuses. These are only a few of the multi-faceted identities expressed by our membership, all of which provide unique experiences and alternative viewpoints so crucial to the Connections dialogue model. Part of the Connections experience is not only learning about these identities, but also appreciating and becoming an ally to members of different identity groups. As a result of Connections’ diversity in multiple aspects of social identity, everyone has an opportunity to be an ally and an information source, making the flow of information multifaceted instead of one-sided.
